About this project
This project was remarkable due to numerous unforeseen circumstances and unexpected events: COVID-19 restrictions, a heatwave in Curaçao, customs hurdles, spontaneous requests from the press for TV interviews, and the creation of new, important networking contacts. Overall, this trip to Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao was highly successful!
An unpleasant surprise!
A sudden increase in shipping costs for the sea containers just before departure was an unwelcome shock. It created a tense moment, almost jeopardizing our mission.
Financial boost from the Adri Baan fund
Thanks to the generous support of the Adri Baan Fund, the containers were shipped on time, and all sports equipment arrived safely while we were there. We were able to meet with customs officials to discuss clearance and transit of the materials, explaining our mission in the process.
We visited schools and a sports hall that had previously received donations. It was wonderful to see, a year later, the impact of our materials. We were rightfully proud and impressed by the dedication of the coaches and organizers making use of the sports hall.
Positive developments
Kolorido Gymnastics is ready for the next step, with its own space where equipment no longer needs to be stored away constantly. The club sometimes allows a child from the street, who otherwise has no sports opportunities, to join a class—creating a warm, meaningful experience.
High demand for equipment and poverty
At one school, the need for materials is immense. Daily decisions have to be made: buying bread for children who come to school hungry or purchasing other essentials. In times of scarcity, food takes priority. Committed teachers understand the importance of digital skills for the children, ensuring they can enter the job market with the proper qualifications.
Logistics have become unpredictable and very expensive, but thanks to the Adri Baan Fund this shipment was saved!
