About this project
In many Surinamese schools, physical education does not meet quality standards due to a lack of proper or functioning equipment.
With better sports equipment, physical education lessons can be more differentiated and delivered at a higher quality level.
Physical literacy
Schools aim to offer children gymnastics opportunities and increase the physical literacy of students. This helps them gain the competence, motivation, knowledge, and confidence to participate in physical activity throughout their lives—the building blocks for lifelong movement.
Mandatory teacher training
To ensure high-quality lessons using the improved equipment, gymnastics coaches and physical education teachers underwent mandatory training to enhance their skills. The training covered not only personal technique but also methodology, didactics, and safety.
A comprehensive project
Two 40-foot containers were shipped, filled with sports equipment including mini-trampolines, crash mats, vaults, boxes, horses, benches, mats, and springboards. Shipping costs were covered by the receiving organization.
Project based approach
An inventory of eligible schools in Suriname was conducted first. Schools needed to have storage and a gymnasium. Each selected school created a needs list.
With support from multiple partners, funding was secured, and the shipment was realized. Partners included KIME Foundation, led by Michael Watson, the Bureau for Community Projects in Paramaribo, the Ministry of Finance and Planning, and the District Commissioner of Paramaribo South-West.
Process
The containers were shipped on September 9, 2024, arriving at the port on October 14. After customs clearance on October 16, the containers were transported to the distribution center the following day.
The containers were unloaded in two days, and distributing all sports equipment to the 16 schools took three days. The first day included an official reception with local dignitaries.
By November 6, 2024, all sports materials had been delivered, and two additional primary schools received leftover equipment.
What a collaboration! We are proud of this project, our team, and our partners!
A golden tip from a former colleague led us to Sports for Children. Now, 16 schools have better sports equipment!
